EXPEDITION OVERVIEW
There are just too many superlatives to
describe the Everest region of Nepal. Magnificent, awesome, awe
inspiring are amongst a few. The Everest region has the highest
mountains in the world and it is for this reason that visitors come
here.
However there are far fewer visitors than one would
imagine as the Annapurnas take the lion share of trekkers, so the
Everest region remains remote and largely unspoilt.
We offer
5 challenging expeditions to Everest Base Camp. All include the must
do climb to Kala Pattha with its legendary views of Everest itself.
These expeditions are a challenge to all as altitude can play a part
in ones enjoyment of the region. For those who want to see Everest,
it's summit and the Khumbu Glacier as well as understand the Sherpa
way of life, then our Everest Base Camp expeditions are for you.

This capital city has an amazing range of traditional and fascinating highlights, whatever your interest. In our morning exploration of the cultural sights and sounds in Kathmandu, we will visit the Bhaudanath stupa, the biggest Buddhist shrine in Nepal and Pashupatinath, an important Hindu temple, where you may have a chance to witness a public cremation. After the guided tour afternoon is free to pack, purchase last minutes items for your trek or simply relax.
Day 3 Mountain Flight to Lukla (2600) Trek to Manjo (2850) Walk approx 5 hrs :
Early in the morning, we take a half hour mountain flight to Lukla, which is the Everest trek starting point. From Lukla, we trek downhill towards the Dudh Koshi (milky river), a raging river that flows from the highest mountains. The trail is fairly easy and well-marked, meandering around fields of potatoes and wheat. We will pass through many traditional villages to reach the vicinity of Manjo for our first night stay at a local Teahouse.
Today, we will see "Mani Wall" which is a completion of many stone tablets, each with the Buddhist chanting inscriptions, "Om Mani Padme Hum" which means, "Hail to the jewel on the lotus". Please respect local traditions by walking to the left to these Mani Walls. We will also see groups of yaks and dzypkyos carrying the trek-gear and trading goods along the trail. Spectacular mountain peaks like Nupla (5885m) Kongde Ri (6093 m), Thamserku (6808m) rises majestically above us.
Day 4 Namche Bazaar (3440m) walks approx 4 hrs.
Today, we enter into the Sagarmatha National Park, another World Heritage site. We walk along the river to the confluence of the Dudh Koshi and Bhote Koshi and cross a spectacular high bridge before commencing our ascent to the village of Namche Bazaar, a gateway to Everest. As we ascend passing through pine forests of rhododendron and magnolia, we will sight our first view of the majestic Mt. Everest from a vantage point.
Day 5 Rest Day in Namche Bazaar
This rest day is very important to acclimatize. Though it is a rest day, you have lots of options. You may walk to the hill above the village to the National Park Headquarters to see stunning view of huge mountains including Mt. Everest. The Sherpa cultural center in the National Park headquarters, has an interesting collection of Sherpa mountaineering items and photographs. You may go on an excursion to Thame village or those who are fit and acclimatizing well may wish to take an optional morning walk to the Everest View Hotel from where the view of the Mt. Everest and Ama Dablam may be seen or just simply relax and watch the Sherpa culture around.
Day 6 Thyangboche (3870m) walk approx 6 hrs.
Leaving the Sherpa capital Namche Bazaar, the trail meanders around the ridges with spectacular views of Ama Dablam and Everest. After lunch we cross the Dudh Koshi and begin to ascend until it finishes at a small flat piece of land which has a famous Buddhist monastery called Thyangboche. This monastery was recently re-built after it was destroyed by fire in 1989. We will have spectacular views of the Massif Everest and the stunning Ama Dablam. As this area is a devout Buddhist region, the wild life is unharmed so there is a possibility that we may see some wild animals such as musk deer, mountain goat and Pheasants etc.
Day 7 Dingboche (4360m) walk approx 4 hrs.
The trail now ascend up to Imja Khola. We may take a slight detour to visit the oldest monastery there. We then head up to Dingboche, situated just beneath Ama Dablan. The trail passes through the valley surrounded by glistering mountains all around.
Day 8 Rest Day at Dingboche
This is an important rest day for acclimatization before we go to higher altitudes with the option of hiking high up to the ridge overlooking the village or up to the Chhukung Village. You may spend the day exploring or relaxing and enjoying the unforgettable mountain scenery.
Day 9 Lobuche (4930m) walk approx 4-5 hrs.
As we are gaining altitude, it is important to walk slowly and steady. Walking on barren slopes above the tree line we will see different peaks such as Cholatse, Lobuche and Pumari unfold in this contrasting and spectacular landscape. Rock Cairns can be seen dedicated to the memory of climbers attempting the high mountains at Dugla Ridge. Walking up onto the Khumbu Glacier (the longest glacier in Nepal) to Lobuche for the overnight camp, one can feel the temperature drop as we are more exposed with our camp situated along this glacier.
Day 10 Gorak Shep (5288m) walk approx 3-4 hrs / climb Kalapathar (5546m) approx walk 4 hrs.
Today, we are high among the glaciers of the world's highest peaks as we trek towards Gorak Shep. After the rest, we ascend the slopes of Kalapathar, a small, rocky peak on the south west ridge of Pumori, a slow, and steady pace once again takes us to a vantage point to savour the sensational Himalayan vistas all around. The climb is not easy but the view from the top surpasses your wildest imagination. We will hear huge glaciers creaking as they move under pressure and be awe-struck at the sheer size and majesty of the surrounding peaks including Pumori, Nuptse, Changtse, Ama Dablam, Tawache, Kantega and Everest – the highest mountain in the world. About 3 kilometer to the east and some 200 meter below, the famed Everest base camp is seen in a bowl at the bottom of the notorious Khumbu Ice Fall. For many trekkers, reaching Kala Pathar is a very emotional experience and we have allowed plenty of time on Kala Pathar to enjoy the experience. We return to Gorak Shep for an over night stay. This spectacular village is surround by Pumari (7145m), Lingtren (6697m), Nuptse (7745m) and of course Everest (8848m). As the sun sets it becomes very cold though the sun is strong during the day.
Day 11 Morning excursion to Everest base camp (5300m) walk approx 4-5 hrs and trek back to Lobuche, walk approx 2-3 hrs.
This morning we head for Everest Base Camp. The trail sometimes can be difficult to follow so do keep an eye on your Sherpa guides and walk carefully. On the way we might encounter yaks and porters supplying food and equipment to the Expedition group in March and April. We could not see the Everest from base camp but we can see the most difficult and dangerous section of any Everest expedition, the Khumbu Ice Fall that flows from the Western Cwm. After Everest Base Camp and Kalapattar, we will descend down to the highlander's village called Lobuche. Another day at high altitude so be prepared for it to be a long and tiring day. The trek to Everest base camp is optional so if you are feeling tired you can rest at Gorak Shep instead.
Day 12 Thyanbocghe walk approx 5 hrs.
We retrace our steps to Dughla: it seems much quicker and easier going down! There can be a tendency to rush as we are walking downhill, but there is still much to see as we descend to Pangboche and visit it's historical monastery, thought to be the oldest in the Khumbu. As we leave the old Pangboche monastery, we head to Thaynboche for the overnight stay there.
Day 13 Khumjung (3780m) walks 5 hrs.
It is a comfortable days walk, with plenty of time to explore these unique and more traditional villages until we reach the "City in the clouds ", Khumjung, where Sir Edmund Hillary built "School house in the clouds" and famous Khude hospital. On the way, as we pass through terraced fields we may see a brightly colored pheasant, the Imphieant Pheasant, the national bird of Nepal. We will also be able to visit the Khumjung monastery where we may have an opportunity to see the famous "Scalp of Yeti".
Day 14 Phakding (2600m) walk approx 6 hrs.
Though, we are returning back, there are still more things to see on the way like the Everest View Hotel (optional) near by, with views of the mountains including Everest, where you can stop for refreshments before passing through the yak breeding farm while descending to Namche Bazaar. After leaving Namche, we continue to descend through the rhododendron forest to the valley floor to follow the Dudh Koshi downhill and then out of the national park to our campsite at Phakding.
Day 15 Lukla (2600m) walk approx 3-4 hrs.
We retrace our steps along the same Dudh Koshi. It is a beautiful and easy walk through pine and rhododendron forest with a view of Kusum Kanguru and other splendid mountains behind us before a gradual climb out of the river valley to the trek starting point Lukla. We will savour our final mountain sunset of the trek as we complete this exhilarating journey.
Day 16 Fly back to Kathmandu
This morning, we have a flight
from Lukla to Kathmandu; it is a thrilling exciting flight over
forests, fields and villages with the Himalayas at the background. On
arrival, we transfer to the hotel. The remainder of the day is at
leisure.
Day 17 In Kathmandu:
There are lots of interesting things to see in the Kathmandu valley: the Royal Palace, Durbar Squares, Swayambhunath (the monkey temple), Patan and an ancient city Bhakatpur etc. Or you may explore down town to shop for souvenirs, getting your photos or slides processed and trying out the various restaurants in Thamel.
Day 18 Departure/Trip Concludes:
It is time to fly back home. Those people traveling by aircraft to further destinations will be transferred to the airport.
Note: The above route and walking hours must be seen as a guide only. This itinerary may change at any time due to weather, trail conditions or other reason.

Classic Everest Base Camp via Jiri (24 Days) XPD011
Starting with a 6 hour (188km/118miles) drive to Jiri (2,100m/6,888ft) this trek follows the traditional route taken by the early Everest expeditions and still serves as the main artery to the road-less Sagarmatha (Everest) region. Known as the Solu-Khumbu it is the home of the Sherpas. This relatively tiny society of 8,000 people is the best known and most admired of all Nepal's ethnic groups.
According to their oral history Sherpas migrated to high valleys south of Mt. Everest from eastern Tibet about 450 years ago, hence the name Shar-pa, "peoples of the east." Many families along this route have converted their homes into trekkers' lodges catering to foreign hikers. Although a popular trekking route the Everest area is visited by only some 8,000 visitors each year - a fraction of the number that visits the Annapurna region. Trekking through the Sherpa villages we share many of their hearths and enjoy their generous hospitality. Trekking in from Jiri has the advantage of helping you to acclimatize en route.
This trek is about 190km/120miles long and the total altitude gained on the innumerable uphill portions totals 9000m - much higher even than Mt. Everest! After Namche we follow the main trail to base camp. We explore the Sherpa villages of Khunde and Khumjung before heading for Thyangboche Monastery. After visiting Chukung Ri we trek to Lobuche for a day-hike along the Khumbu Glacier to Everest Base Camp (5,364m/17,600ft) and a climb of Kala Patthar Peak (5,550m/18,200ft) for a close encounter with Mt. Everest. Surrounded by some of the highest mountains on the Earth you will bask in this incredible mountain scenery before swinging back by way of, little visited, Phortse village to fly out of Lukla.
