CODE XPD017-22

GRADE – DIFFICULT/STRENUOUS

ITINERARY – COSTS – INCLUSIONS

For information about what to bring, what to expect etc click on our link to the Kilimanjaro Predeparture Information

EXPEDITION OVERVIEW

Standing astride the equator, yet permanently snow-capped at 5895m (19340ft), Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa's roof top and the world's highest free standing mountain.  Surrounded by some of the world’s greatest game reserves, Kilimanjaro towers above these hot, fertile plains like a massive sentinel, beckoning adventurers to climb her.

Many travellers are attracted to her highest point - Uhuru Peak on Kibo - which can be reached by several easy walking or scrambling tracks.  The two main summits of Kilimanjaro: craggy Mawenzi, 5149m, and 'flat-topped', Kibo, 5896m are separated by The Saddle, a 5km wide, high-altitude, semi-desert. Kilimanjaro possesses a whole range of environments including the summit glaciers, screes, cliffs, afro-alpine moorland then forests which lead down to cultivated foothills.

MAIN TRACKS ON KILIMANJARO

The Machame and Umbwe Tracks are tough yet very scenic ways up Kilimanjaro..  Steep forest paths, easy scrambling and airy ridges lead to the final screes and hence the crater.  Nights are spent in tents.  The Mweka Track is generally used to descend after either of the last two tracks.

The Shira, Nanjara and Oloitokitok Tracks are more remote but can be organised by us. The remote Lemosho Glades Track, is particularly beautiful and goes through one of the few areas on Kilimanjaro that is rich in game. We offer two tracks along the Lemosho, one via Barafu Hut and the other across the Western Breach with a camp in the crater.  The later Lemosho is open only to experienced mountaineers.

We also offer the Rongai Track up Kili’s northern slopes.  This track is slightly easier than its southern cousins and we have had a great deal of success up this track over the years. The Rongai is an interesting and beautiful track up the mountain.

EXPEDITION GRADE

The Kilimanjaro expedition is considered a Difficult to Strenuous expedition. High altitudes are reached while some trails are considered more difficult than others so please read trail information carefully before deciding your track. The Lemosho and Umbwe via the Western Breach are only open to experienced trekkers.

ITINERARY

Kilimanjaro via Machame Track Code XPD017

Day 1:Transfer from airport to hotel (B&B).

Day 2: Free time around hotel. Local walks available.

Day 3: Drive to Machame village. The climb begins at the end of the tarmac road. Walk through shambas then forest to the Machame hut (3000m, about 6 hours).

Day 4: Continue along the steep ridge going on to rock ridges and through heather. The track turns west into a river gorge, reaching Shira hut at 3800m, 5 hours.

Day 5: Continue east towards Kibo passing the junction, then east towards the Lava Tower. Shortly after this, you descend to Barranco hut (3940m, 4 hours).

Day 6: A short scramble to the top of the Great Barranco and then a traverse over scree and ridges to the Karanga Valley (4000m, 3 hours), beneath the icefalls of the Heim, Kersten and Decken Glaciers. After climbing out of the Karanga Valley the trail ascends a ridge to the Barafu Hut, a bleak location with little vegetation at 4600m, (3 hours walking).

Day 7: An early start for the ascent to the rim of the Kibo Crater between the Rebmann and Ratzel Glaciers, (4 hours); the last section before the rim can sometimes be snow-covered and an ice-axe or ski stick is useful for balance. From here a further hour leads to Uhuru Peak, from where there are often fine views of Meru to the west and the jagged peak of Mawenzi to the east. Descend to the Barafu Hut for a rest and lunch before continuing on down to camp at Mweka Hut in the giant heather zone on the forest edge. Those with energy on the summit may wish to descend to the Reutsh Crater and visit the dramatic ice pinnacles of the Eastern Icefields.

Day 8: A 3-4 hour descent through beautiful forest brings you to the Park gate and your waiting transport. Drive back to the hotel.

Day 9: Depart hotel after breakfast. Transfer to airport or continue on an extension.

Kilimanjaro via Umbwe Track Code XPD018

The south side of Kibo presents a much more rugged appearance. Deep gorges (barrancos) cut the forested slopes and spectacular ridges lead up to the screes below the 6000 foot southern precipices of glaciers, icefalls and cliffs.

The most magnificent track to the southern side is the Umbwe. It follows a ridge up through natural forest, with dramatic views of the Great Barranco and Breach Wall, to the Barranco Hut.

From Barranco we traverse around the southern circuit to the Barafu Hut and the final ascent up scree to the summit. It is a strenuous track but worth the effort to be free of the possible crowds on the Marangu track (which we do not offer) and to enjoy the beauty of the forest, moorland, and glaciers of the mountain.

This is a tough walking trip, with some steep terrain, but within the limits of a fit individual used to hill walking. A guide accompanies you on the ascent; porters carry your luggage and all communal food, camping and cooking equipment; you carry your day sack with the day's needs such as water bottle, waterproofs, spare jumper, camera. Your guide will be responsible for the pace, food and well-being of the group: all important aspects in enjoying your treks and climbs.

Day 1:Transfer from airport to hotel (B&B).

Day 2: Free time around hotel. Local walks available.

Day 3: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp. Drive from Moshi to the Umbwe Gate. Commence the climb through the rain forest with packed lunch on track. Dinner and overnight at the first encampment at 2,800 meters.

Day 4: To Baranco Camp. After breakfast, we leave the glades of the forest and follow an ascending path on the open moorland to the Barranco Hut located at 3,900 meters. Dinner and overnight at the campsite.

Day 5: To Karanga Camp. After breakfast, we leave Barranco and continue on a steep ridge passing the Barranco Wall, to the Karanga Valley campsite.

Day 6: To Barafu Camp. After breakfast, we leave Barranco and continue on a steep ridge passing the Barranco Wall, through the Karanga Valley (4200m), and the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail. We continue to the Barafu Hut. You have completed the South Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Here we make camp, rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are to be seen from this position.

Day 7: Summit then Mweka Hut. Very early in the morning (midnight to 2am) we continue our way to the summit. You head in a northwesterly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. At Stella Point (5685m), you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see (weather permitting).

From Stella Point, you will encounter snow all they way on your 2-hour ascent to the summit. At Uhuru Peak, we have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. Faster hikers will see the sunrise from the summit.

It can be very cold at night at these elevations, but it will be quite warm by the end of the hiking day. You will want clothing for both extremes with you.

From the summit, we now make our descent continuing straight down to the Mweka Hut camp site, stopping at Barafu for lunch. You will want gaiters and trekking poles for the loose gravel going down. Mweka Camp is situated in the upper forest and mist or rain can be expected in the late afternoon.

Later in the evening, we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep. Beer and soda may be available for purchase at the Mweka Hut -- the only location on this track.

Day 8: To Moshi. After breakfast, we continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy).

From the gate, continue another hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle will meet you at Mweka village to drive you back to the hotel.

Day 9: Depart hotel after breakfast. Transfer to airport or continue on an extension.

Lemosho via Barafu Hut and Crater Camp Track Code XPD019

The Lemosho Track: is an unspoilt, remote, little-used and beautiful way up to the Shira Plateau. It can either be used to gain the Western Breach Track or followed by the Kibo South Circuit to ascend by the easier Barafu Track. The track is one of the few where groups may be accompanied on the first day by an armed ranger as the forests around the Lemosho Glades are rich in buffalo, elephant and other big game animals.

Day 1: Transfer to our hotel.

Day 2: Free time around hotel. Local walks available.

Day 3 : After breakfast and briefing, drive to Londorossi Park Gate (2250m, 2.5 hours). From here a forest track requiring a 4WD vehicle leads to Lemosho Glades (2100m, 11km, 45 minutes) and a possible campsite (park fees are not paid to camp here). Walk along forest trails to Mti Mkubwa (big tree) campsite.

Day 4: After breakfast, we continue as the trail gradually steepens and enters the giant heather moorland zone. Several streams are crossed then it gains the Shira Ridge at about 3600m and drops gently down to Shira 1 camp located by a stream on the Shira Plateau.

Day 5: After breakfast, a gentle walk across the plateau leads to Shira 2 camp on moorland meadows by a stream. A variety of walks are available on the Plateau making this an excellent acclimatization day.

Day 6: From the Shira Plateau, we continue to the east, passing the junction towards the peak of Kibo. As we continue, our direction changes to the South East towards the Lava Tower, called the "Shark's Tooth." Shortly after the tower, we come to the second junction which brings us up to the Arrow Glacier at an altitude of 4,876 meters. We now continue down to the Barranco Hut at an altitude of 3,860 meters. Here we rest, enjoy dinner, and overnight. Although you end the day at the same elevation as when you started, this day is very important for acclimatization and will help your body prepare for summit day.

Day 7: After breakfast, we leave Barranco and continue on a steep ridge passing the Barranco Wall, to the Karanga Valley (4200m) campsite.

Day 8: After breakfast, we leave the Karanga Valley and pass the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail. We continue to the Barafu Hut, which is located at an altitude of 4,600 meters. You have completed the South Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Here we make camp, rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are to be seen from this position.

Day 9: Summit Day: As we are setting up camp in the Crater tonight we do not need to start out as early as other groups. This part of the climb takes about 6 hours. It can be very cold at these elevations, but it will be quite warm by the end of the hiking day. You will want clothing for both extremes with you.

At Uhuru Peak, we have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. From the summit, we now make our descent to the Crater Camp. There we can explore the Furtwangler Glacier and visit the rarely visited Ash Pit. It will get very cold tonight.

Day 10: From the Crater Camp we now make our descent back out of the crater and continue straight down to the Mweka Hut camp site at 3,100 meters. This part of the descent takes about 5 hours. You will want gaiters and trekking poles for the loose gravel going down.

Later in the evening, we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep. Beer and soda may be available for purchase at the Mweka Hut -- the only place on this track.

Day 11: After breakfast, we continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy).
A vehicle will meet you at Mweka village to drive you back to the hotel.

Day 12: Depart hotel after breakfast. Transfer to airport or continue on an extension.

Lemosho via Western Breach (Experienced Trekkers Only) Code XPD 020

Day 1: Transfer to our hotel.

Day 2: Free time around hotel. Local walks available.

Day 3: After breakfast and briefing, drive to Londorossi Park Gate (2250m, 2.5 hours). Day 6: From the Shira Plateau, we continue to the east, passing the junction towards the peak of Kibo. As we continue, our direction changes to the South East towards the Lava Tower, called the "Shark's Tooth." Here we rest, enjoy dinner, and overnight.

Day 7: After breakfast, we head for the Arrow Glacier at the base of the Western Breach. Although this is a short day, it is very important for acclimatization and will help your body prepare for the hardest days to come.

Day 8: After breakfast, we scramble up the Western Breach to the crater rim with magnificent views. This will be your longest, most strenuous day.

Day 9: Early morning, we continue our way to the summit of Uhuru Peak at 5,985 meters. At Uhuru Peak, we have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. From the summit, we now make our descent continuing straight down to the Mweka Hut camp site at 3,100 meters. This part of the descent takes about 5 hours. You will want gaiters and trekking poles for the loose gravel going down. Later in the evening, we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.

A vehicle will meet you at Mweka village to drive you back to hotel in Moshi.

Day 11: Depart hotel after breakfast. Transfer to airport or continue on an extension.

Rongai Track Code XPD 021

The Rongai Track is easier and more scenic than the Marangu or Machame tracks, and the success rate is very high. All climbers sleep in tents (tents are included) and meals are served in a dinner tent or on a blanket outside.

The track starts on the north side of the mountain just south of the Kenyan border, and is one of the least traveled tracks. The descent is down the Marangu Track on the south side of the mountain, so climbers see the mountain from many view points.

Day 1: Transfer to our hotel.

Day 2: Free time around hotel. Local walks available.

Day 3: To Rongai Cave. After completing the necessary registration formalities at Marangu National Park gate, transfer by Land Rover to Rongai (about 1.5 hours). The climb begins from the attractive wooden village of Nale Moru (1,950 m.) on a small path that winds through fields of maize and potatoes before entering pine forest. The track then starts to climb consistently, but gently through attractive forest that shelters a variety of wildlife. The forest begins to thin out and the first camp is at the edge of the moorland zone (2,600 m.) with extensive views over the Kenyan plains.

Day 4: To Kikelewa (Second) Cave. The morning walk is a steady ascent up to the 'Second Cave' (3,450 m.) with superb views of Kibo and the Eastern ice fields on the crater rim. After lunch, leave the main trail and strike out across the moorland on a smaller path towards the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. The campsite is in a sheltered valley with giant Senecios near Kikelewa Caves (3.600 m.)

Day 5: To Mawenzi Tarn. A short but steep climb up grassy slopes is rewarded by superb all-round views and a tangible sense of wilderness. Leave the vegetation behind shortly before reaching the next camp at Mawenzi Tarn (4,330 m.), spectacularly situated in a cirque directly beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi. The afternoon will be free to rest or explore the surrounding area as an aid to acclimatization.

Day 6: To School Camp. Cross the lunar desert of the 'Saddle' between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach School campsite (4,750 m.) at the bottom of the Kibo crater wall. The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent before a very early night

Day 7: To Summit and Horombo Hut. Begin the final, and by far the steepest and most demanding, part of the climb by torchlight around 1 a.m. Proceed very slowly in the darkness on a switchback trail through loose volcanic scree to reach the crater rim at Gillman's Point (5,685 m.) Rest there for a short time to enjoy the spectacular sunrise over Mawenzi. Those who are still feeling strong can make the three hour round trip to Uhuru Peak (5,896 m.), passing close to the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy most of the summit area. The descent to Kibo (4,700 m.) is surprisingly fast and, after some refreshment, continue the descent to reach the final campsite at Horombo (3,720 m.).

Day 8: To Moshi. After breakfast, A steady descent takes us down through moorland to Mandara Hut (2,700m.), the first stopping place at the Marangu track. Continue descending through lovely lush forest on a good path to the National Park gate at Marangu (1,830 m.). At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy).

A vehicle will meet you at Marangu village to drive you back to the Marangu Hotel.

Day 9: Depart hotel after breakfast. Transfer to airport or continue on an extension.

Umbwe Track via Western Breach (Experienced Trekkers Only) Code XPD 022

Day 1: Transfer from airport to hotel (B&B).

Day 5: Lava Tower Camp. After breakfast, we leave Barranco towards the Western Breach. We pass through large areas of Giant Groundsel and start to get great views of the Breach. We sleep at Lava Tower at about 4500m a.s.l.

Day 6: Arrow Glacier. This is really an acclimatisation day with a short trek to Arrow Glacier at the base of the Western Breach. We will also take a short hike up the Breach to get even more acclimatised.

Day 7: Crater Camp. We do the Western Breach during the day at it is safer (you can see where the rocks are falling). This is a long day at high altitudes. After 6 hours of scrambling and trekking we will reach the crater rim and the awesome sight of the Furtwangler Glacier and the summit. Camp at 5700m.

Day 8: Summit and Mweka Camp. Early morning, we continue our way to the summit of Uhuru Peak at 5,985 meters. At Uhuru Peak, we have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. From the summit, we now make our descent continuing straight down to the Mweka Hut camp site at 3,100 meters. This part of the descent takes about 5 hours. PRIVATE EXPEDITIONS

Our team are based at our hotel near Moshi year round.  We also offer several scheduled trips which combine the ascent of Kilimanjaro with that of Mount Kenya or Mount Meru and a Safari in Tanzania.

PRE DEPARTURE INFORMATION

Once your expedition is confirmed we will send you detailed Pre Departure Information which includes a list of recommended clothing and personal equipment, along with other relevant information to help you prepare for your trip. Prior to the trip departure from Moshi, you will attend a detailed trip briefing and orientation meeting to make sure that you are well prepared for your river trip and trek.

CLIMBING OTHER MOUNTAINS

There are many game parks to be visited and mountains to be climbed in East Africa.  In Tanzania Mount Meru is a high beautiful volcanic mountain perfect as training before the ascent of Kilimanjaro. We have a combined Mt Meru – Kilimanjaro – Safari package for those with a bit more time. The active volcano Lengai is a sacred mountain to the Masaii. For these you may consider organising the trip as a private group. Our guides are based permanently in Moshi throughout the year.  In Kenya, Mount Kenya offers top quality rock and ice climbing in a superb setting. In Uganda, Elgon’s caldera provides remote high altitude walking while the Rwenzori are a great, glaciated and mystical mountain range to be explored. Email us if you are interested in any of these options.

 SAFARI EXTENSIONS

Safaris are a great way to end an expedition.  They are more relaxing than your typical expedition and they allow you to appreciate what Africa is truly famous for, the wildlife. The following are our Safari extensions; however, if you are not interested in climbing or your partner isn’t, then we can tailor Safaris to your liking.  We have Tent and Five Star Safaris.

MOONLIGHT ASCENTS
Almost all nights in the East African mountains (excluding the Rwenzori) are clear and for many mountains such as Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya, Lengai and Mount Meru a pre-dawn start is crucial. To make the night ascents more pleasant and in some cases beautiful, getting up and walking up by moonlight is the optimal situation. As a rough guide a full moon rises at sunset and sets at sunrise which is just about sunrise. This combined with the strength of the moonlight this provides excellent conditions for walking at night. However as the moon sets about 1 hour later every day. the best conditions are probably about 2 to 3 days after the full moon as then at about 5am the moon is still big and quite high in the sky throughout the critical hours of the ascent. If you plan your ascent before the full moon you might get up by moonlight but it will set before twilight. An ascent a week after a full moon means you will have a half moon rising about midnight and this will be overhead in the sky around sunrise. If you have some flexibility in your plans make use of the moon!

Why get up in the middle of the night anyway? An early edition of the MCK guidebook summed up the situation quite well (referring to the final ascent day on Kilimanjaro) - you feel sick and you cannot sleep so you may as well get up anyway. Then when you start it is cooler. The scree is frozen so it is more stable and you cannot see where you are and how far you have to go so you do not get so depressed. This maybe a bit exaggerated but it is not far off the truth. Good acclimatization will help reduce discomfort but another very important factor is the sun during the day, can have a very debilitating effect on the body. On Kilimanjaro the air temperature may not be very high but the high levels of radiation can completely drain you of energy. On mountains such as Lengai it is almost dangerous to start the ascent too late as the day time temperatures soar and heat exhaustion could at least force you to retreat and in extreme circumstances heat stroke can be fatal.

A final advantage of a night start is that you have a longer day available to you - being caught out by nightfall at the end of a hard day, particularly if the weather has deteriorated during the day can be very unpleasant. Early starts add to your safety margins.

WHEN TO CLIMB

Even though one can climb throughout the year, January, February and September are the best months, with June, July, August, October and December also being good.

WEATHER CONDITIONS

Equatorial to arctic conditions are present on Kilimanjaro and Meru. The range begins with the warm, dry plains with average temperatures of 30 c, ascending through a wide belt of wet tropical forest, through zones with generally decreasing temperatures and rainfall, to the summit where there is permanent ice and below freezing temperatures. The temperature at the top of the mountain gets as low as minus 25 degrees Celsius.

FOOD

Our typical food on the mountain includes:

Breakfast: coffee, tea, porridge, fruits, fruit juice, scrambled eggs/omelet, sausage, toast, margarine, honey and jam.

Lunch: hot tea, coffee, chips, sandwiches, biscuits, pancakes with honey or jam, and fruits

Dinner: soup, cooked meat or vegetarian meal (these include chicken/beef with rice, sliced fresh carrots and green beans, mashed potatoes, and salads), fruits, and fruit juice, and variety of hot drinks.

If you have special dietary requirements just let us know as we are more than willing to accommodate.

TIPPING

Tipping our porters, guides and cooks is an important way for us to supplement their wages. The following is a guide on what to expect to pay while in East Africa.

Guide:US$10       Porter:US$5      Assistant Guide:US$7       Cook:US$4

This tipping structure is per group/per day.

This tipping structure is per group/per day. This is a local payment and cannot be paid directly to No Roads Expeditions. The amount you tip will depend on which Track you do however on average it adds approximately US$150 – US$250 to the cost of the expedition. All companies use this tipping arrangement.

CONTINGENCIES

In case one person gets sick and has to stay behind or even return, he or she will be accompanied by one of the assistant guides while other climbers go on with the leading guide and other assistant guide(s).

Unlike most other companies who charge about US$100, we provide a free transfer from the mountain to the hotel should a climber return earlier than planned. However, if the climb is extended for any reason, NRE will charge $170 per day per person.

INFORMATION AND SUPPORT

If you have any comments, questions or want more information, please let us know. We are here to support you with all information to help you prepare for your travels to Africa.

EXPEDITION GRADE (EXPEDITION DIFFICULTY)

GRADE 1 - EASY

Easy trekking,  generally between 900m/3,000ft. and 2,000m/6,500ft. Clients need to be regular walkers to get full enjoyment from their experience. It is possible however to design 'easier' three to four day treks with perhaps only three to four hours walking per day on request.

GRADE 2 - MODERATE

Moderate trekking 900m/3,000ft. and 3,000m/10,000ft. but possibly involving side trips to higher elevations.

GRADE 3 - DIFFICULT

Reasonably demanding trekking at altitudes up to 4,000m/13,000ft. with side trips to higher elevations. Some treks included here will, in part, be well away from villages on ill- defined mountain trails.

GRADE 4 - STRENUOUS

Treks of a demanding nature, requiring all participants to be fit and in excellent health, often in remote alpine areas and sometimes reaching altitudes in excess of 5000m/18,000ft.

ALPINE

Extremely demanding treks sometimes in very remote areas on rough terrain. Participants should have at least a basic knowledge of use of crampons and ice axes, though first time climbers may be accepted on some of the so called 'easy' tracks on these peaks. Medical certificates are required prior to acceptance on any climbing treks
