Unfortunately we see too many Porters along the Kokoda Track, walking without shoes or if they do have them, they are grossly inadeqaute. While some of the bare footed Porters choose to walk without shoes, many would prefer them. Footwear obviously protects the feet, provides cushioning for the joints in the ankle, knees and back and thus can help Porters maintain a healthy lifestyle during the working year. Good footwear also enables Porters to work for many more year than otherwise thought.
We are collecting appropriate shoes for ALL Porters along the Track. If there is a Porter without good walking shoes then we will offer them some.
What we need from you are walking shoes (boots), in good condition sizes 6-11. If you can help, please send them to P.O Box 109 Southland Centre, VIC 3192.
We will take them with us on each trip. With nearly 400 Porters working the Kokoda Track, we would like to see them all kitted out by the end of 2010.
