Should I mention the unsurpassed views of some of the highest and most majestic mountains on the planet, augmented by the power of enormous glaciers and topped off by a colourful yet understated culture first?

Or should I mention the electric blankets first?

After all, this is a hike to the Everest region, so what would electric blankets have to do with this trek?

Pretty much everything, because it is a sign that this trek among the mountains of the Solu Khumbu and Everest is very different.

First of all, this journey has no real “ultimate” destination. It is a journey into a region, the Solu Khumbu, an immersion in the landscape and the culture. A slow meander between giant mountains and glaciers, past prayer flags, and through monasteries.

And while the iconic Namche Bazaar is on everyone’s trek to Everest, that is where this journey departs from all others.

It is a journey to the home of the most famous Sherpas, Thame, and one of the most recognised (if not known) mountains on the planet, Ama Dablam. It is an adventure to the summit of mountains rarely mentioned, Sunder Peak, and to the world’s highest resort with unsurpassed views of Mount Everest, Kongde.

And at the end of each day, you will hop into a bed warmed by an electric blanket.

Sir George Everest, the man Mount Everest was named after, reportedly did not want it named after himself, but rather a more local name. Everest (the man) believed his name could not be written in Hindi, nor pronounced by the local people. He favoured an indigenous name, but the Geographic Society, which obviously wielded a great deal of power and influence, argued that there were a number of local names that were not official and therefore not legitimate and, in 1865, adopted the name still recognised worldwide today, an enduring legacy of colonial rule.

“My wife, Sue, and I had the pleasure of doing the Luxury Everest Base Camp Trek with No Roads Expeditions. The environment and scenery were breathtakingly beautiful. Highlights included constant views of Mount Everest, Ama Dablam Base Camp trek, Thame Valley scenery, and staying at the Kongde Lodge (4250m) with sweeping views to Mount Everest. The hotel accommodation was excellent. A hot meal, wine, electric blanket, and ensuite in our private room, certainly made the daily trekking easier. Thank you No Roads and in particular your lead guide Netra, for facilitating this trip of a lifetime.”

Andrew and Sue, Australia

The focus of our Luxury Everest and Ama Dablam Base Camp trek is to showcase the topography of the Solu Khumbu and at the end of each day, provide you with the most comfortable accommodation possible.

All our lodges are well-appointed with private rooms and private ensuites with warm showers. Each room has a very comfortable bed, with plenty of blankets and yes, an electric one too.

Dinners are served in warmed rooms and are a delicious mix of local Nepalese, Indian and sometimes European cuisine. In the bar each afternoon, complimentary happy hour drinks are served. Many of the lodges have a comfortable lounge area with a library attached.

Our expert guide team will not only inform you and explain what you are seeing but will ensure you have a safe journey. Our itinerary has been formulated to give you the best opportunity to acclimatise as well as to see some of the most outstanding places the Solu Khumbu has to offer.

And our journey starts and ends in a Palace in Kathmandu. What more could you possibly ask for?

The Journey

Our staff will be waiting for your arrival at Kathmandu’s International airport for the beginning of your Luxury Everest and Ama Dablam Base Camp trek. After collecting luggage, you’ll be escorted to one of the most historic and luxurious hotels in Nepal, the Hotel Shanker. Here, you’ll be greeted with an arrival drink and have time to relax and unpack your belongings before we attend a traditional dance program to properly welcome you to the liveliness of Nepal. (D)

See some of Kathmandu’s most culturally significant sites up close with our friendly and knowledgeable tour hosts. We’ll lead you up the stairs to the white dome of Boudhanath Monastery and down to the banks of the Bagmati River where Hindu temples of Pashupatinath attract religious followers. Over dinner, we’ll review our itinerary for the days ahead and answer any questions about what to expect. Tonight you can explore Lazimpat, one of Kathmandu’s most upscale neighborhoods, as plenty of lounges and restaurants are within walking distance of your hotel. Be sure to get enough rest, however; our great adventure begins tomorrow! (B)

From Kathmandu, we’ll board a plane for the steep, short runaway of Lukla. Have your camera ready to descend from the clouds of the Himalayas into the Khumbu valley. We’ll start our trek by crossing bridges suspended over the crystal Dudh Koshi and will overtake lines of yak carrying goods for the valley. A warm meal waits for us at Phakding where we’ll stay for the evening. (B,L,D)

Namche is what postcards are made of! To get there, we’ll cross suspension bridges passing over rushing rivers and framing snow-capped peaks. Your trekking team will be sure to wake you with ample time to enjoy the day. We’ll pass several mountain villages before we enjoy a hot lunch in Jorsale. Our bellies will be full as we continue to adjust to the altitude of Sagarmatha National Park to witness our first views of Mount Everest. (B,L,D)

If you’re feeling strong, venture to Khumjung and explore the surrounding areas of Namche. For those wanting to relax, Namche has several coffee shops and bakeries, and you can even find wifi to connect with friends at home. We’ll spend another night here to acclimatize and get used to the elevation before continuing on our journey. (B,D)

Setting out for Tashinga, we’ll encounter more steady inclines as we make our way higher into the Himalayas. After reaching Mongla Pass (3975m), snow-capped peaks surround us and native animals may cross our path upon our descent into a thick rhododendron forest. It will take us about five hours for us to reach Tashinga, and we’ll enjoy a homemade dinner to warm our tired bodies after we arrive. (B,L,D)

Today’s trail will be a challenging one, rising and dropping beside mountain ridges and circling Mani stones, intricately carved Buddhist mantras. With the river winding below and white peaks glistening in the background, your mind will be distracted from any exhaustion you may feel. You’ll also notice several stupas, small temples erected on hilltops, and will feel chilliness of thinner mountain air. To help our bodies adjust to the altitude, we’ll rest at Pangboche for the night to prepare for the next day’s climb. (B,L,D)

Ama Dablam is one of the world’s most beautiful mountains. Our trail today crosses rivers and circles a small lake before we reach the grassy meadow where mountaineers begin their approach to this mountain known for its sharp cliffs. The vivid blue of the Himalayan sky will make a perfect photo to share with friends at home. Total walking time is about five hours, and we’ll return to Pangboche for a rest. (B,L,D)

From Pangboche we head back towards Thame however this is too far for one day so we will overnight in Namche Bazaar again. (B,L,D)

After sipping our morning coffee, we’ll set out for Thame, the home of some of the most famous Sherpa people, Tenzin and Apa. We’ll set foot on the original yak trail connecting the Solukhumbu region with Tibet. Birds will soar above us as we walk towards the fortressed village of Thame. This area is known for delicious potatoes, so tonight’s dinner will be exceptionally delicious. (B,L,D)

Directly behind the village of Thame is Sunder Peak, a scenic viewpoint less traveled by other guide companies. This mountain lives up to its name, “Beautiful,” and overlooks outstretched vistas of the valley. Climbers often place prayer flags here, and with winds leading into Tibet, you’ll experience a magical moment. Today we will have the opportunity to visit the Thame Monastery, one of the oldest Gompa’s in the Everest region, before returning to Thame for another freshly prepared meal. (B,L,D)

The world’s highest resort is our destination today, a breathtaking viewpoint of Everest and the Khumbu region. We’ll trace the same steps the original Khumbu valley Sherpas used and see many snowy peaks of the Himalayan range. You’ll feel like you have the mountains to yourself, away from the crowds of Everest Base Camp, and can step outside into a peaceful lightshow, beneath stars brighter than you’ve ever seen. If you get cold, sip hot chocolate or take a hot shower to soothe achy muscles. (B,L,D)

Though our walk today is a long one, the decline will be a welcome change for tired feet. Six hours later, we’ll return to Lukla to celebrate the success of our trek with dinner, dancing and drinks. (B,L,D)

After our flight from Lukla, we’re return to Kathmandu where you can wander through the colourful markets of Thamel or ask a member of our team for their recommendations. With monasteries, temples, health spas and social activities, we’re happy to suggest our favorite city activities. (B)

In case of bad weather, we’ve scheduled an extra day in our itinerary as flights can be postponed. After reaching Kathmandu, you have earned your rest! Take a hot shower and spend the day as you please. Our leaders have recommendations for you based on your interests: gift shopping, local restaurants or late-night happenings. (B)

Along the way, our footsteps will cross the shadows of Ama Dablam as our bodies adjust to higher elevations and more rugged terrain. Returning from Ama Dablam base camp, we’ll travel back via Thame, home of the Sherpa people and Kongde, home of the world’s highest resort.

Prepare for an adventure of a lifetime

Before we begin our trek, our team will review our itinerary to Lukla and answer your questions about what to expect in the days leading to Ama Dablam. The Dudh Koshi River has carved a natural trail for us to follow as we hike towards the picture-perfect village of Namche Bazaar. We’ll spend several nights adjusting to the altitude before making our way up to Pangboche and Ama Dablam base camp. On our way back we will head to Thame and test our stamina on the Sunder Peak standing at over 5300 meters. From there we head to Kongde with incredible views of Everest. This is an incredible journey.

We get asked a lot of questions about our Luxury Everest and Ama Dablam base camp trek. The following are certainly the most common however if you have another question please let us know or the answer may be found in our Trip Notes section.

How hard is the trek?

Although climbing to the summit of Everest is legendary, you will be surprised that hiking this region is not that difficult after all. The enemy on this trek is altitude. As such we need to take it slowly so our bodies acclimatise. There are no really difficult sections on the trail with the possible exception just before Namche Bazaar and heading into Kongde. We have 2 acclimatisation days on this trek where we spend the day hiking to a higher altitude, before heading back down for our bodies to recover. If you are a reasonably active person who puts in a bit more training for this trek, you should have no problems.

Do I have to carry my own gear?

You do not have to carry your own gear. Our 1 Porter 1 Trekker policy allows us to carry all your gear for you during the day. Your bag will be at the luxury lodge ready for you to freshen up at the end of the day. All you need to carry is a day pack which will have some wet weather gear in it such as the supplied poncho, possibly warmer clothes, water and sunscreen and some money. Usually, the pack will weigh around 5kgs.

Do you cater for particular dietary requirements?

Yes of course. Whether you are vegan, vegetarian, gluten intolerant or allergic to a particular food we can accommodate everyone on this trek. Just let us know in advance and we will make it happen.

Pradip Nepal manager No Roads Expeditions

This trip will take you away from the main trails to some of the best parts of the Solu Khumbu. I love going to Thame and visiting the Thame Monastery situated on the side of the mountain. And I love our luxury lodges. They are so warm and welcoming and they have great facilities for you to enjoy. If you love nature but also appreciate somewhere comfortable for the night, this trek is perfect for you.

Huayhuash Trail Peru

First things first, we pronounce this trek "waywash". Now we have that out of the way, the Huayhuash trail is considered the most beautiful trek in South America. With 5000 and 6000 meter peaks, the source of the Amazon and once home to the Shining Path guerrillas, the Huayhuash is a truly incredible trek.
