Volcanoes of the Lesser Sunda Islands
The Lesser Sunda Islands or Nusa Tenggara lay east of Java and include Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa, Sumba, Alor, Timor and Flores. This region has been characterised as a veritable volcano factory, producing spectacular islands with high volcanic peaks, lush rain forests and a diverse range of cultures. The two dominant volcanoes of this chain are Gunung Rinjani on Lombok and Mt Tambora on Sumbawa.
- Trek to the summit of both Rinjani and Tambora
- Visit Moyo Island and explore its wonderful nature
- Explore the Donggo Plateau near Bima
- Swim in a high altitude lake
Our expedition will take us from beautiful Bali to the summit of Gunung Rinjani on the adjacent island of Lombok. Gunung Rinjani nearly reaches 4000m a.s.l and is considered sacred by not only those who live in Lombok but also Bali. Her summit dominates the island. Within her caldera, a new volcano rises through the surface of an enormous fresh water lake. The views are truly spectacular and worth the struggle to her summit.
From Rinjani, we will head to the next island, Sumbawa, which is home to the mighty Tambora famed for starting the great potato famine and inspiring indirectly the infamous Frankenstein character. Tambora is a remote volcano and few visit her slopes. Her main eruption of 1815 is considered one of the biggest in history and the scar from this event is still evident from the rim of her caldera.
Once we have trekked to the summit of both these amazing mountains we will head down to Bima and fly back to Bali. This is a journey few ever undertake into a part of Indonesia that has yet to be tapped by mass tourism.

Overnight in tents.
